Lilly Cemetery

LILLY CEMETERY, HARRISON COUNTY, MO

Marion Twp., Sec. 36, 2.8 miles east of Ridgeway on Rt. A, about 1/8 mile on gravel road to north at top of hill.

This cemetery land was originally set aside on farm property of John Lilly/Artimissa Westfall, necessitated by the need to have a place to bury their son, Charles M. (20 Apr 1871 - 15 Dec 1880). Even though it was a family cemetery, it was also made available to neighbors and friends of the family. All of the children of John/Artimissa and the children's spouses are buried in this cemetery. It remained a part of the farm until the land passed from the ownership of Lilly descendants. The last Lilly descendant landowner was Laura May Johnson Robertson. On her passing in 1997, the farmland was inherited by children of her brothers, Andy and Dewey Johnson. To enlarge the cemetery, additional acreage was purchased by children of Andy Johnson from the estate before the land was sold. The deed was then legally transferred to the Lilly-Bowman Cemetery Board. Improvements were started in late 1999. Thanks to Nina Beeson who audited this cemetery in November, 1999. Names were added for unmarked frames from plat map drawn up earlier by Paul Andrew Johnson, a copy of which is in possession of Nina Beeson.
